On April 20th, 2021, Her Excellency Lilian Chatterjee presented her Letter of Introduction to Honourable Allen Chastanet, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, formally assuming her position as High Commissioner of Canada to Saint Lucia.

The ceremony, hosted virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, marked the first of its kind for Saint Lucia.

Her Excellency Lilian Chatterjee began her career with the Government of Canada in 2003 when she joined the Canadian International Development Agency. She previously served as Director General in both CIDA and Global Affairs Canada prior to her appointment as High Commissioner to Guyana, with concurrent accreditation as Ambassador to Suriname and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Ms. Chatterjee is a former journalist who worked in Canada and Southeast Asia. She subsequently worked in Canada’s House of Commons and with several international NGOs before beginning her diplomatic service.

During the ceremony, High Commissioner Chatterjee underscored Canada’s valued relationship with the Government of Saint Lucia, and reviewed several key issues raised during the countries’ senior-level bilateral consultations hosted virtually in February 2021. High Commissioner Chatterjee reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to Saint Lucia in the areas of gender equality, economic resilience, security and climate action, particularly as the country builds back from COVID-19.

Ms. Chatterjee looks forward to deepening the bilateral relationship between Canada and Saint Lucia over the next three years.

In response, Prime Minister Chastanet expressed his gratitude for Canada’s continuous support to Saint Lucia’s development process, particularly during the ongoing pandemic. The possibility of convening bilaterals between the two countries to further discuss areas of mutual interest was placed on the table and will be explored in the near future.
